A COMPLETE GUIDE
Your Child’s First Day at PCNS
Starting school is an exciting milestone for both you and your child. To help you navigate this new chapter, we've created a comprehensive guide to ensure a smooth(er) transition.
Here’s what to expect, how to prepare, what to bring, and tips for continuing the learning journey at home.
A FIRST DAY AND A FIRST YEAR
What to Expect
The First Day:
-
Emotional Moments: It’s normal for both parents and children to feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. Some children might feel a bit anxious, while others may dive right in.
-
A Warm Welcome: Our teachers will greet your child with a smile and help them settle in. We’ll start with simple activities to make them feel comfortable.
-
A New Routine: Your child will begin to learn the structure of their day, which typically includes playtime, snack time, group activities, and quiet time. This routine helps them feel secure and understand what comes next.
The First Year:
-
Growth and Development: You’ll see significant growth in your child’s social, emotional, cognitive, fine and gross motor development. They’ll make new friends, learn new skills, and become more independent!
-
Parent-Teacher Communication: Expect regular updates from teachers about your child’s progress, including scheduled conferences and informal check-ins.
-
Special Events: Throughout the year, there will be special events like field trips, holiday celebrations, and parent involvement days. These are great opportunities to participate in your child’s PCNS experience and meet other members of the PCNS family.
-
Partnering With Families: We believe in a strong home and school connection. Our school makes a connection with each family. Staff and Parents work together to begin this journey and provide ample opportunities for communication along the way.
LET'S GET PREPARED

How to Prepare
PREPARING YOUR CHILD:
-
Talk About School: In the days leading up to the first day, talk about what preschool will be like. Use positive language and focus on the fun aspects, like making new friends and playing with new toys.
-
Visit the School Together: If possible, visit together beforehand to familiarize your child with the environment. Point out the classroom, play areas, and anything that might catch their interest.
-
Practice the Routine: A few days before school starts, practice the morning routine. This includes waking up at the same time, getting dressed, and eating breakfast together.

PREPARING YOURSELF:
-
Emotional Readiness: Prepare yourself for the emotional aspect of the first drop-off. It’s okay to feel teary-eyed, but try to stay positive and reassuring for your child.
-
Stay Informed: Familiarize yourself with PCNS' school’s policies, including drop-off and pick-up procedures, communication methods, and emergency contacts.
Starting preschool is a big step, and with a little preparation and lots of love, your child will thrive at the Presbyterian Church Nursery School in Morristown.
Remember to celebrate small victories and be patient with the adjustment process. We're here to support you and your child every step of the way, making this year a wonderful experience filled with growth, learning, and joy.
Welcome to our PCNS family!
